Where did you get this info? Email or snail mail? I have not been contacted regarding migration yet, and don't plan to do so until 'officially' being notified......

This information comes from my CDLess migration training class I took Friday. This migration process is only taking place for SBC customers in the SNET region and not everyone is being migrated right now. Customers who are to be migrated will be contacted by both snail mail and e-mail. I don't feel 100% safe giving out the URL because I work for the company and don't want to be accused of giving out anything that might be considered proprietory in a public area. But if you want you can call into tech support (877-722-3755) and they will give you the URL. They aren't migrating everyone today because if you tried to do that for all the customers in all of the states then there is sure to be big mess on our hands.

Thanks for the info! Good to have another 'company person' chime in and let us know what's going on.

I can wait until I'm contacted, everthing works for me now and I have no immediate need for the new features....

So what happens now?

SO is there an FAQ about the migration? I want to know what kind of hoops I am going to have to jump through to get to Yahoo. Will I still have my @snet.net emails, and for how long?

I did the "secret" migration a few weeks ago and am VERY happy with the Yahoo service. I did not install any CD but, of course, that means I don't get the Yahoo browser additions. I understand that it's actually a pretty good piece of work.

But I DO use my Yahoo all the time. I find it a very good service. Transition of my email was very smooth, I just had to make some small adjustments Outlook and my wife's Agent. I have since switched to Eudora and that is working very well also.

I picked the Premium services that come with the SBC/Yahoo account, there are several selections and they make up quite a value. Have set up an email account for my wife that she is pleased with ... especially the junkmail folder which does seem to capture much of her junkmail. I also set up a throwaway account to use while I am on travel. I won't use it except occasionally and will get rid of it if it starts to get a lot of junk. I do NOT give out the primary account name for A N Y T H I N G ! It's much harder to change the primary account than to trash a secondary and make a new one.

So, all in all, I'd say SBC and Yahoo have a winner!

No worries, Mate!

Re: So what happens now?

Email addresses that now have @snet.net will NOT change.. The email server settings, however, will, to pop.snet.yahoo.com and smtp.snet.yahoo.com after migration. All SBC email will be channeled thru yahoo's servers, the mandatory migration deadline has yet to be determined and I'm sure there at least several months to go.

This change will have no impact, go or bad, on line quality or connection reliability as we're talking, in essence, changing ISPs not DSL providers.

I made the transition when it was first available for dialup customers, several months ago, installed the software and all... I choose to use my vanilla version of IE and rarely go into my yahoo homepage. I mainly like the nationwide dialup access and browser accessibility to my email... Not to mention the other perks like online storage though I have yet to use it as uploading via 26.4k connection , not...

Thanks for reminding me, MrF! The reason I did my conversion early was to get the nationwide dial-up and easy access to my email while travelling. When I was on SNET I had to make long distance calls but now can easily get a local phone number to use dial-up when I have to. Access from the hotel broadband also works seamlessly.

Isn't the browser downloadable during the migration? They said the training course it was. I tried the link they gave us for customers who want to download the software after migrating but it doesn't work. The browser is just Internet Explorer with a different skin.

Re: Yahoo! migration starts today!!

Can you choose which browser to run at will or can you uninstall the Yahoo one afterwards? I'd like to try it out but if I don't like it I'd want to be able to either not use it or get rid of it.

I just migrated.

So now what? I did the main account and got pissed off because I saw an email of a beta test that I wanted in really bad. I never check that email, because I have never used it. Oh well. Now its time to migrate the other 3 email addresses. Its pretty easy. Now I get to use local dial-up in Rhode Island while I'm at work.
Say, do I have to use that dialer program or can I do it manually under "Network and Internet Connection'?

Any messages in your old mailbox will be transferred to the new migrated one within a day or two. You can create a dial-up networking connection. The dialer isn't required.

You can use the dialer program or make your own dialer through windows (I assume your using XP.) Both will work. The windows dialer doesn't need anything special, just the phone number, userid, and password.

Manual dial-up.

Thanks folks for the links for setting up a manual dial-up. My company is kinda funny with software that they haven't approved. They actually have a 'big brother' program on every Windows based PC/laptop to monitor installation of any program. So I have a local login on the Win2k laptop to get my email and stuff until I get my new home PC built next week.

Re: Yahoo! migration starts today!!1

I did the "secret" migration and personally, I would rather have had the "ties" in SBC's board meetings who came up with the transition idea talk about the weather instead of computer needs.

The browser does not allow you to have your own chosen start page, you're stuck with the one SBC hardcoded in to the browser.

The bonus features from what I see so far are only for the main user...

The one cool feature only works with the SBC/Yahoo Browser, which is the auto login to Yahoo Messenger like AOL does with AIM. However it only works if the SBC browser is used, not if you choose to use IE.

I tried a couple registry tweaks to change the homepage in the SBC Browser, but no dice, anyone else???

I like the Login page that shows all the user accounts and have tried it as my homepage in IE and it works ok, just not as good as with the SBC Browser...

Anyone have any "inside" info on whether they are going to address the lack of browser flexibility?

The browser is inflexible on purpose. It is just Inernet Explorer with a skin with the purpose of being just for accessing Yahoo! stuff. If you want flexability it is not suppose to be used. Basically like you said about trying to be like AOL. It is for the basic user who needs to be walked through the how to use the internet.

Thanks for the welcome Xylon69, I've been around the page for a long time, just never really posted before. SNET DSL has frustrated me in the past by "knocking" or "capping" my connection speed, but after a few calls to a few friends in key places, I got things situated...BUT this Yahoo thing rubbed me the wrong way...

Hopefully they release an updated browser and allow sub-accounts the access to the "free" premium features, if the sub-accounts can't have access to the "free" premium services, why bother with parental control, if the kids want to access info from Encyclopedia Britannica, they need to use the main account and could make changes unless I hang around to always enter my password...

For all that you gain with Yahoo "extras", may as well go to AOL....
