🚗 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗘𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗸'𝘀 𝗚𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆I like engaging my students during lectures by highlighting innovative approaches that disrupt traditional methods. One standout example is how Elon Musk, a relative newcomer in the automotive industry, has radically applied the principles of 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 in manufacturing the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.Traditionally, manufacturing a car chassis involves welding several dozen separate sheet metal blanks, which violates the three minimum part criteria of Design for Assembly. These criteria emphasize 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀. Musk's approach? Integrate these numerous parts into only three 𝗚𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.Enter the Giga Press: a groundbreaking solution leveraging large-scale die casting. Musk didn't just adopt existing technology produced by the Italian company IDRA GROUP; he evolved it. By developing a new aluminum alloy, utilizing larger molds, and employing massive presses, he converged several enabling innovations to transform chassis manufacturing.This approach significantly reduces the number of separate parts in a chassis - traditionally almost a hundred - to just a few. It perfectly embodies the first and second criterion of Design for Assembly: 𝗶𝗳 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁. The Giga Press does just that, merging multiple components into a single, complex piece. @sandymonroe Better Business; lighter, stiffer, repeatable, quicker cycle time, ease of assembly for the outer shell, one third the body shop, less sealants and welds etc……I was expecting a lot more than “better business” from an engineer. Starting to sound like a bean counter In your advanced age. Incorporate this technology or find another line of business that needs stamping, bending, and welding expertise.
