Quincy Hall already snagged the gold medal for the United States in the men’s 400, and Alexis Holmes will have the chance to make it a sweep for Team USA after taking one of two automatic spots during her semifinal heat Wednesday (50.00).
Holmes finished behind the Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino (49.21). Paulino was second among all qualifiers, while Holmes was seventh. Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser was the fastest in the semifinals at 49.08.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas won the women’s 400 in 2016 and 2020, but she did not make the semifinals this year. Paulino was the silver medalist in 2020 Tokyo.
In the men’s 400-meter hurdles Friday, Team USA’s Rai Benjamin also will attempt to improve on the silver medal he won in Tokyo. He will, however, be running right next to defending Olympic champion Karsten Warholm, who won in Tokyo with an Olympic-record time of 45.94.
